Union Mac é um projecto formado por dois músicos Suecos (voz e guitarra) e complementado por um baterista e um teclista de sessão. Quando ouço falar em Hard Rock melódico ou com inspirações nos 80s fico um pouco de pé atrás, isto porque habitualmente este tipo de bandas e projectos deixa sempre muito a desejar. Não há grandes canções, nem temas com refrões memoráveis, nem melodias e riffs cativantes, a voz é apenas aceitável (na maior parte dos casos), etc. Mas, neste caso, assim que carreguei no “play”, a surpresa foi enorme! Grandes malhas, belas melodias, uma voz fantástica, riffs e melodias bem sacadas às 6 cordas, secção rítmica potente, teclados bem encaixados e inventivos, som poderoso quanto baste mas limpo, é tudo perfeito nesta estreia “Lost In Attraction”! Há imenso tempo que não ouvia um disco tão bom de Hard Rock de influências oitentistas. A banda tem a sua identidade própria mas alguns dos nomes que podem ser associados, apenas para ajudar o leitor a localizar-se, podem ser: Journey, Saga, Whitesnake, Survivor ou Europe. E pensem apenas nas melhores fases dessas bandas! Essencial para os amantes deste tipo de sonoridade! RDS

Wendy O. Williams – Bump ‘N’ Grind: Live (2006) – Cherry Red

A controversa Wendy O. Williams foi a líder dos Punk Rockers Norteamericanos Plasmatics nos finais da década de 70. Após a dissolução dos Plasmatics ela seguiu uma carreira a solo na década de 80 numa linha mais Hard ‘N’ Heavy. Gravou diversos albums sob nome próprio (incluindo um single com o Lemmy dos Motörhead) e em 1989 deu-se uma reunião dos Plasmatics e o álbum conceptual “Maggots: The Record” foi gravado. Após isso Wendy O. Williams retirou-se do mundo da música. As suas actuações ao vivo incluiam despedaçar carros, destruir aparelhos de TV com marretas e cortar guitarras ao meio com motoserras; “vestia-se” usualmente com pouco mais do que creme ou fita-cola isoladora; os problemas com a polícia eram usuais devido às atitudes obscenas dentro e fora do palco; pousou nua para diversas revistas masculinas e os Plasmatics foram até banidos em Londres. Apesar da sua reputação esta foi nomeada para um Grammy na categoria de “Best Female Rock Vocal” em 1985. A 8 de Abril de 1998 cometeu suicídio, tinha então 48 anos de idade.A actuação contida neste DVD foi gravada no Camden Palace Theatre em London a 1 de Outubro de 1985. Encontram-se aqui grandes temas como “Goin’ Wild”, “No Class”, “Party”, “Live To Rock”, e até uma versão de “Jail Bait” dos Motörhead com a participação dos próprios Lemmy e Wurzel. Há aqui o aparelho de TV destruído com a marreta, a guitarra cortada em dois com uma motoserra, o bikini de cabedal, um seio fora do bikini a certa altura, a atitude anárquica bem rock ’n’ roll e muito e bom 80’s Hard Rock bem alto e rápido. Não sou grande fã da sua voz áspera mas a música agrada-me, sendo fã dessse tipo de Hard Rock dos 80s, e esta actuação em particular está cheia de energia e poder. A Cherry Red Films está a fazer um bom trabalho a recuperar estas gravações dos 70s e 80s em DVD mas é uma pena que apenas possamos ver 55 minutos de performance ao vivo a nada de extras. Talvez um par de videoclips ou uma curta entrevista ajudassem a complementar o material ao vivo. De qualquer maneira, esta é uma bela peça da história do Rock ‘N’ Roll e um testemunho de uma das mais controversas Punk Rockers nos USA, e TU deves adquirir isto o mais rápido possível! RDS

Empire – The Raven Ride (2006) – Metal Heaven

Este é o 3º álbum deste super projecto liderado pelo guitarrista Rolf Munkes (Majesty). No inicio a banda tinha músicos como Lance King (ex-Balance Of Power), Mark Boals (ex-Malmsteen), Don Airey (Deep Purple) ou Anders Johansson (Hammerfall). Os músicos foram mudando e hoje em dia Munkes faz-se acompanhar por Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath, também gravou a voz do anterior álbum), Neil Murray (ex-Whitesnake, ex-Black Sabbath, envolvido no projecto desde o início) no baixo e Andre Hilgers (Axxis, Silent Force) na bateria.As músicas para este novo trabalho foram compostas por Rolf Munkes e Tony Martin e foram produzidas pelo próprio Munkes nos seus Empire Studios. A capa foi da autoria de Jason Juta (Domain, Altaria).O estilo aqui contido neste rodela é um Hard Rock bem balançado e pesadão quanto baste e que pode agradar a fãs de Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Whitesnake ou outros nomes do Hard ‘N’ Heavy mais tradicional. Toda a banda está fantástica mas tenho que destacar a grande voz de Tony Martin, aqui no seu melhor, a secção rítmica está bem oleada, há grandes riffs e solos de guitarra. Malhas a destacar podem ser “The Raven Ride” (grande refrão), “Breath” (mais outro belo refrão de Hard Rock e uma melodia de guitarra bem sacada), “Carbon Based Lifeform” (com apontamentos electrónicos a adornar), “Al Sirat – The Bridge To Paradise” (ritmo lento bem balançado e uma prestação vocal exemplar de Tony Martin), “Changing World” (mais na linha AOR), “Maximum” (o tema mais pesado do álbum, com um ritmo mais uptempo, coros fantásticos).Para quem diz que os músicos que abandonam as suas bandas de origem e enveredam por trabalhos a solo e projectos paralelos não conseguem fazer mais nada de relevo, este é o disco perfeito. Este disco é mesmo caso para dizer, a idade é um posto (no caso de Tony Martin e Neil Murray, pois os outros dois elementos são mais jovens). Quem sabe, sabe! RDS

Empire - Entrevista

1 – How did you come up with this idea, this project called Empire, in the first place?

Back in 1999 I did my first solo CD. I was trying out things like which tunes are great for me and which style etc. I enjoyed working with vocalists and thought of doing a next album with some great singers and musicians. And asked Lance King and Mark Boals. Both agreed and we did a wonderful album together. Some people said with all the guests this is an all star project so I focused on putting a line up together which looks more like a band. And here we are, a four peace group.

2 – There were several line-up changes since the first record in 2001 until now and this new album. There were some major musicians involved from the beginning. Who was a part of Empire in the past, why did they left, who is playing in Empire now?

Actually they did not left, it was a project and my intention and direction changed a bit and so I have choosen different people to work with to aim that goal.

3 – Isn’t it hard to join all the musicians to record and play?

It's a bit of organisation but that happens every time you do a record. And it's worth it when the result is great.

4 – Besides Empire you also play in Majesty. Isn’t it hard to maintain both bands alive?

I left Majesty some weeks ago cause I want to do my own things and wasn't too happy in the band in the last time.BTW I have another Band called Razorback and both take some time.

5 – You composed the album with Tony Martin and you also produced the record in your own studios. Is it important for you to keep yourself involved in the whole process?

I was very happy to do it alone this time because I had a clear idea of what it should sound like. And I worked til that sound was on the desk.I was writing riffs for Tony and we arranged stuff together so it was soon clear where this road will lead us to. Another point is having all the time you need for a project like this. You don't have to pay too much studio time for other people.

6 – Who wrote the lyrics? Tony Martin? What kind of subjects did he used for the lyrics in this record?

Yep, Tony Martin did all the lyrics and there are some great ones on this. Lots of stuff is about the good and mostly bad things on us humans.And there is plenty of it isn't it?

7 – How would you say this album differs from the previous records “Hypnotica” (2001) and “Trading Souls” (2003)?

It's more mystic and dark and rocks straight in your face. On the first there was a progressive touch and the second was a bit more melodic and softer. I'm really happy with the new output and think the next should be in this direction. The music fits very good with Tony Martin and this was the concept.

8 – Are you planning to take this project to the road or is it just a studio project?

I would love to, but things are not so easy in these times. I'm working on it!!!

9 – Do you want to leave a final message to your fans?

Akira Kajiyama + Joe Lynn Turner - Entrevista

1 - How did you come up with this idea of an album between you and Akira Kajiyama? You already knew him before from several projects, including the Japanese Rainbow tribute album, some of your solo records and even the Japanese tour of HTP but, how did you came up with this new idea?

Basically, we came up with the idea because of the connections you stated in your question. In addition to that, the record company thought it would be a good idea.

2 - In the press-release it is mentioned that you recorded the vocals and he recorded all the instruments. Does he really play all the instruments: guitar, bass, drums and keyboards? Didn't you have any guest musicians in the recording process?

Absolutely no guests per se but Toshio Egawa played keyboards and is credited on the liner notes to the CD. That is one aspect that makes this CD so brilliant is that Akira not only produced it but played so many instruments. He is truly a major talent.

3 - This new record "Fire Without Flame" has lots of different songs, it has some fast songs, mid-tempos, AOR ballads, bluesy rockers, etc. It just came out like this or did you really wanted to write such an heterogeneous record?

We did not set out to make it this way. The songs reflect styles that are influences that we both have. It's better to showcase a bit of diversity that to be one dimensional.

4 - You also have a new label for this record, AOR Heaven. How did you got in touch with them and why did you chose them to release this album?

Akira and Yamaha sought out AOR Heaven. They knew I was on Frontiers as a solo artist in Europe and I know they did not want a conflict of interest and I respect that. We are very pleased that AOR Heaven has released this record in Europe... I am especially happy to see Akira get some deserving attention from the European fans and media. He deserves it.

5 - Where did you recorded the album and who produced it?

We both produced our parts separately but exchanged files back and forth. Technology enables us to do this that it is like being in the same studio. Gary Tole and I produced the vocal tracks. Akira did all the rest.

6 - What kind of subjects did you used for the lyrics in this record?

Reincarnation, romance, lack of romance, broken hearts, personal transformation, rock and roll wildness, ripping it up, interpersonal and even some political subject matter (i.e. "Slow Burn").

7 - Do you plan to play this songs live of with Akira or is it just a studio project?

Certainly, it would be great to expose the European and other continents to the talent that Akira has and the synergy we have together onstage. However, there are no definite tour plans in the works as of the date of this interview. If the right situation were to come about where it would make good business sense for us to do some shows outside of Japan, we would probably entertain the idea. When we set out to do this record we did not set out with it in mind as being ONLY a studio project, if that is what you mean.

8 - In the past year I've been asking to a lot of musicians and bands what do they think about the internet piracy, the albums being available months before the release date, etc. I'm curious with your response to this because your career is over 3 decades now and you saw a little bit of everything in the music industry, it is always changing so, what do you think about all this internet file sharing, downloading, mp3?

It was bound to happen with technology. There really is no stopping it without severe invasion of freedoms. Regulating can only do so much. Boots and pirating will exist no matter what changes are brought about in technology. Hey... there was just as much of this going on back when we had analog and tapes.

9 - What are your plans for the future? Solo records, collaborations like this one, playing live, DVD?

This summer, I am heading to Japan for a very special show with the New Japan Philharmonic. I have a few USA shows planned, one is a major radio festival in Tucson, Arizona with Alice Cooper and others.I just finished filming a major TV commercial here in the USA. I contributed a song to Howard Lease's (Heart) new record in the works.And, yes, I do hope to start writing and recording another solo CD fairly soon.

10 - Do you want to leave a final message to your fans?

I want to say thank you to them all from the depths of my heart and soul. It is their loyalty that keeps me going. I love them all and thanks for their support.

Akira Kajiyama + Joe Lynn Turner – Fire Without Flame (2006) – AOR Heaven

Quanto a Joe Lynn Turner penso que não é preciso referir muito. Se estão a ler esta crítica é porque o nome vos chamou a atenção. Basta apenas dizer que foi vocalista de nomes como Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen ou Hughes Turner Project (HTP), além de já ter lançado vários álbuns a nome próprio. Akira Kajiyama é um guitarrista Japonês que fez parte de uma banda chamada Precious na segunda metade da década de 80. Em 1998, juntamente com Yukio Morikawa (ex-vocalista de Anthem) gravou um álbum de tributo a Rainbow intitulado “Niji Densetsu (Legend Of Rainbow)”, onde Joe Lynn Turner foi convidado especial. A partir daí as colaborações entre ambos começaram a surgir. Esta é mais uma, um álbum no qual JLT gravou nas vozes e Kajiyama gravou todos os instrumentos.No total são 11 temas de Hard Rock por vezes com um toque de Blues, outras vezes mais AOR, outras vezes um pouco mais pesado, há um pouco de tudo. “One Day Away” é muito linha AOR; “Fire Without Flame” tem um riff de entrada muito AC/DC (faz lembrar “Highway To Hell”); “Carnival Of Souls” é mais rápido e faz lembrar Rainbow, tanto na voz como na parte instrumental, há também as habituais baladas como “Heart Against Heart” ou “Bad Feeling” (toque Blues), “End Of the Line”, “Looking For Trouble” e “Down And Dirty” voltam aos temas rápidos, grandes temas de Hard Rock a abrir. A fechar está “Slow Burn” a lembrar muito “Burn” dos Deep Purple”.Aconselhado aos fãs de Hard Rock linha 80s, Rainbow, Deep Purple e Joe Lynn Turner a solo. RDS

Stormzone – Caught In The Act (2007) - Escape Music

Os Stormzone são Irlandeses e seguem as orientações mais melódicas do universo Hard ‘N’ Heavy. Pode falar-se aqui numa versão mais moderna da NWOBHM de inícios da década de 80 em fusão com algum AOR e Hard Rock melódico dos 80s. As influências passam por Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Rainbow, DIO, Journey, Survivor e Queensryche, entre outros. Todos os membros da banda já passaram por diversas bandas irlandesas de Rock mas a personagem mais mediática é o vocalista John Harv Harbinson que já fez parte dos Sweet Savage, além de outras bandas como Emerald, No Sweat e Den Of Thieves. De facto a voz é um dos pontos fortes, mas não o único pois, toda a banda está de parabéns. A guitarra está bem definida e potente mas com muita melodia e com solos fabulosos que nos fazem sacar da nossa guitarra aérea. A secção rítmica é forte e sólida mantendo eficazmente a cadência a meio-tempo da maioria do álbum. As teclas é que não fazem sentir muito a sua participação, mas cumprem a sua parte. A produção é fantástica, som potente mas com aquele espírito dos 80s que pode agradar a uma audiência acima dos 30 e que é fã de AOR, uma cortesia do senhor Mudd Wallace (Mama’s Boys, Van Morrison, Therapy?). Uma das coisas que salta logo à vista é a capa, a qual foi desenhada por Rodney Matthews (responsável por capas de nomes como Magnum, Asia, Thin Lizzy, etc) e que assenta bem no espírito 80s do disco e do som dos Stormzone. Temas a destacar, é difícil pois todo o álbum é bom, mas podem ser “Crying in the rain” (Hard melódica na linha Magnum), “Call of the wild” (bem potente e com uma melodia bem orelhuda), “Beating of a heart”, “New world” (uma das mais rápidas, mais no lado do Heavy Metal), “Sky high” ou a balada com cheiro de Glam Rock dos 80s “Stranger things have happened”. Uma estreia que promete altos voos por parte destes Irlandeses. Para fãs das bandas acima mencionadas, saudosos do Arena Rock dos 80s e para quem gosta do seu Rock potente mas cantarolável e com muita melodia de guitarra e voz. RDS
