DRAGONHEART RECORDS - Abril / Junho 2007

80% www.somniaestatus.com

Soul Takers - Flies In A Jar (2007): Mais uma banda Italiana.

Hail Holy Martyr! 85% www.holy-martyr.com

Doomsword - My Name Will Live On (2007): Ahhh, mais um disco destes mestres do Epic / Doom / Heavy Metal contemporâneo! 95% www.truemetal.org/doomsword

Powerwolf - Entrevista

1 – This new album is more into classic 80s Heavy Metal than the previous one which was more dark and filled with “spooky” melodies and passages. The gothic / vintage horror ambiences are still there but now it seems that you’re more focused into the harder side of your music. Did it just came up like this or did you really wanted to write music in this direction?
It developed. We never plan anything. It happens. You´re right, Lupus Dei is much more heavy and more metal than our debut. And it´s more catchy and striking, even though we still love Return in bloodred. I think a band should never record the same album twice.

2 – Are you satisfied with this new album, the songs, the recording process, production, final product?
Absolutely. We love it, it´s exactly what we had in mind, and right now I don´t know how we could top this one, haha…

3 – The lyrics in Powerwolf are as important as the music because it manages to parallel the visual side of the band. What kind of subjects influenced you to write the lyrics for “Lupus Dei”?
There´s a concept making the album a full circle: in the introduction “Lupus daemonis” the wolf, who´s the protagonist of the concept story, looses belief in everything, he struggles with god and finally descends. He becomes an evil creature being greedy “We take it from the living”, signs a contract with the devil “Saturday satan” and believes in nothing but blood anymore “In blood we trust”. During the album he starts seeing rays of light again, realizing the misleading practice of some religious groups “Mother mary is a bird of prey”, and finally witnesses god in the final “Lupus dei”.
-
4 – The cover artwork for this record is simple but awesome. Who is responsible for the frontcover and what does it mean?
The front cover was done by Niklas Sundin, I think he did a killer job! We wanted to envision the wolf in the moment he witnesses god.
-
5 – You recorded some parts of the record in a chapel built in the 12th century. How did you came up with this idea? Did you wanted to capture the “spirit” of such an old place in your music?
Well, a good friend of us offered us the chance to use a small church built in the 12th century for some recordings. That church was located in the middle of nowhere in a forest, and the atmosphere was haunting. Exactly the surrounding we needed for an album like Lupus dei. You can´t compare recording in a studio to recording in a church – it´s so atmospheric and special that it can only be highly inspirative… the only disadvantage was that there was no heating system in the church and we recorded in January, with snow outside and temperatures at minus 10 degrees…

6 – You also recorded a couple of tracks with a 30 piece classical choir. Can you tell me about the experience? In which manner did the choir’s contribution added a new dimension to the music of Powerwolf?
It was fantastic, I mean, it´s an overwhelming moment when you´re standing in an empty church and 30 people are singing your songs – it was shivers down our spines the whole time we´ve been there. I think the choir really adds a new dimension to some of the songs. I mean: a lot of bands simply use samples or keyboards for that, but you can never reach the atmosphere and the density of a real choir singing your songs with that. It was a lot of work to get the choir convinced to sing for a heavy metal band, but it was definitely worth all the work!

7 – Do you have a tour prepared to promote the record?
We´ll play on some of the summer festivals now, and then play shows together with Grave Digger in Germany in autumn, and right now we´re into negotiations for a full European tour which should happen in autumn also – so watch out for the wolves!!!!!

8 – You can leave now a final message if you want to.
Thanx for reading – and prey for heavy metal everybody!

Suspyre – A Great Divide (2007) – Nightmare Records

RDS

Manitou – No Signs Of Wisdom (2007) – Metal Heaven

RDS

Consortium Project IV - Children Of Tomorrow (2007) - Metal Heaven

As.

RAM – Forced Entry (2005) – Black Path Metal Recordings

RDS

Symphorce - Entrevista

1 – The new album is more diverse than the previous records. We can listen to the usual Symphorce style but some tracks are way more Thrashy, some are more melodic with a traditional Hard Rock approach and we even have a couple of Gothic Metal oriented tunes. Did it just came out like this or did you really wanted to write this kind of eclectic songs?
We didn’t plan the sound of our new album. We all wanted to record a new Symphorce album and like you wrote, we did. You can hear it in every single song. We’re Symphorce, we’re back, and we’re gonna kick some ass…. But we didn’t remain standing. We’ve never been a band who let sound one album like a previous one. Listen to the last 4 Albums and you will see an evolution. This record is the result of it. Everybody of us has a different and wide spreaded taste of music. If something sounded well, we took it. Why should we limit our music? Metal is a style with a lot of influences. We took most of them…

2 – Are you satisfied with this new album, the songs, the recording process, production, final product?
Yeesssssssssss… we are. This album includes everything we felt: Rawness, aggressions, sentimentality. I like the mixture between the smooth electronic parts and the brutal guitar riffs. Even the preproduction sounded very well. The sound was terrible, but you could feel the result. Right after that, everything went very fast. The studiojob wasn’t easy going, we recorded as fast as possible, but everybody did a great job. I think, more time would not lead to a better sound. We’ve been prepared very well and everything succeeded.

3 – Once again, like in the previous record “Godspeed”, Dennis Ward produced the album. Why did you decide to work with him again?
He knows exactly what he’s doing… and the recording process with him was amazing. He is so fast in recording that the musician can work concentrated only on his own playing. You have nearly no time between the single takes. And if You listen to “Godspeed”, You’ll understand why we choose Dennis once again…

4 – There were some line-up changes and now you have a new drummer, Steffen Theurer. What happened and how did you found this new member?
Sascha wanted to concentrate on his new drumschool. He is living in a small town near Paderborn, It took a lot of time and money to come for rehearsels, photoshootings, recording sessions etc. So it was the only way for him to realize his school. There is no struggle and the whole band whishes him the best. Steffen is a good friend of mine since years. He only played in a cover band and wanted to make own music. The other band members knew Steffen as well. So we decided to let him play a part of the Budapest show (a good friend of the band played the first part of the show). He did a great job. He got one week to learned the songs and no rehearsel. We had a lot of fun on stage and it was interesting how the songs sounded in another new drum version… hahahaha…

5 – The cover artwork is in the same vein than the previous records so, this is already a Symphorce trademark. Who draws the cover artworks?
Travis Smith… he send us this cover and it fits really good to the music… I love it…

6 – The lyrical side in this record seems way darker than before. What kind of subjects influenced you to write the lyrics for “Become Death”?
Andy wrote the lyrics. I‘m convinced that he was influenced from the music, which is much darker than the songs so far. Andy always wrote lyrics about live. Things that happened in his live. Note: It was not easy for the band in the last few years. Our music is not made for narrow-minded people. You said in the first question that our music is diverse. Yes, it is, and it always was. It is still Symphorce, but it involves a lot of influences and styles.Andy agitated a lot for the band. Often he told us what he wanted to do but that’s not possible because of some businessman who “be aware of everything about music”… This might be a reason for the dark lyrics…

7 – Do you have a tour prepared to promote the record?
Not yet. We’d be lucky to present the new record live. We’rer checking a few options, keep an eye on our website. If not, we’re gonna play some single shows…

8 – You can leave now a final message if you want to.
For all the metal fans: Stay open minded. Don’t believe everything the Medias wants to tell you… We can change and reach a lot. And we should!!!

Wendy O. Williams – Bump ‘N’ Grind: Live (2006) – Cherry Red

RDS

Raintime – Flies & Lies (2007) – Lifeforce Records

Gosto de quase todo o disco (a balada “Dream On” é um bocado frouxa) mas, se tiver que realçar temas, estes podem ser “Legends Of The Past (Carry On)”, Welcome To Paradise” e “Time Will Tell” (umas guitarras a lembrar Iron Maiden). Chris Caffery – Pins And Needles (2007) – Metal Heaven

Warmachine – The Beginning Of The End (2006) – Nightmare Records

Quem sabe, sabe! RDS

Empire - Entrevista

1 – How did you come up with this idea, this project called Empire, in the first place?
Back in 1999 I did my first solo CD. I was trying out things like which tunes are great for me and which style etc. I enjoyed working with vocalists and thought of doing a next album with some great singers and musicians. And asked Lance King and Mark Boals. Both agreed and we did a wonderful album together. Some people said with all the guests this is an all star project so I focused on putting a line up together which looks more like a band. And here we are, a four peace group.

2 – There were several line-up changes since the first record in 2001 until now and this new album. There were some major musicians involved from the beginning. Who was a part of Empire in the past, why did they left, who is playing in Empire now?
Actually they did not left, it was a project and my intention and direction changed a bit and so I have choosen different people to work with to aim that goal.

3 – Isn’t it hard to join all the musicians to record and play?
It's a bit of organisation but that happens every time you do a record. And it's worth it when the result is great.

4 – Besides Empire you also play in Majesty. Isn’t it hard to maintain both bands alive?
I left Majesty some weeks ago cause I want to do my own things and wasn't too happy in the band in the last time.BTW I have another Band called Razorback and both take some time.

5 – You composed the album with Tony Martin and you also produced the record in your own studios. Is it important for you to keep yourself involved in the whole process?
I was very happy to do it alone this time because I had a clear idea of what it should sound like. And I worked til that sound was on the desk.I was writing riffs for Tony and we arranged stuff together so it was soon clear where this road will lead us to. Another point is having all the time you need for a project like this. You don't have to pay too much studio time for other people.

6 – Who wrote the lyrics? Tony Martin? What kind of subjects did he used for the lyrics in this record?
Yep, Tony Martin did all the lyrics and there are some great ones on this. Lots of stuff is about the good and mostly bad things on us humans. And there is plenty of it isn't it?

7 – How would you say this album differs from the previous records “Hypnotica” (2001) and “Trading Souls” (2003)?
It's more mystic and dark and rocks straight in your face. On the first there was a progressive touch and the second was a bit more melodic and softer. I'm really happy with the new output and think the next should be in this direction. The music fits very good with Tony Martin and this was the concept.

8 – Are you planning to take this project to the road or is it just a studio project?
I would love to, but things are not so easy in these times. I'm working on it!!!

9 – Do you want to leave a final message to your fans?
Hope you all like "The Raven Ride" and it would be a pleasure to come into your town and rock your place!!!Thanks so much for the interview.

Falconer - Entrevista

1 – Between the last album and this new one there were some line-up changes. The original lead singer Mathias Blad is back in the band. What happened with Kristoffer Göbel?
I realised that since we adapted a bit to Kriss´voice the music didn’t come out as I wanted although I was satisfied at the time of release. Kriss didn’t do our natural music style the best and we didn’t do the adapted music style the best. So, is everything should be as good as possible we had to do music that was natural and straight through the heart and then we needed Mathias. It was so to say a way to make the best possible result that we could.
-
2 – The new album recovered the Swedish Folk and medieval influences you used to have and you lost somehow in the previous record. It just came out like this or you really wanted to write this kind of songs, the Falconer old style?
Both yes and know. I knew that I wanted the folk style back and as soon as I began writing the ideas just kept flowing. It felt like I had opened a door that I had kept closed for a while and just piling up those kind of inspiration. The result became a bit more folk and medieval than I had thought from the beginning, but I guess it could have been some kind of catching up with the time we didn’t do this style.
-
3 – I interviewed about a year ago concerning the “Grime Vs Grandeur” record and you told me that you were not satisfied with the composition and the recording process. What about this new work? Are you satisfied with this new album, the songs, the recording process, production, final product?
This time it has actually worried me a bit since I was so proud of the result. I thought it would be hard to do something better. I haven’t really found anything that I’d like to change. It’s gone some months now and I’ve realised that I can’t do the exactly same thing better so therefore I look for some small changes in the music. Probably nothing people will notice anyway, but it keeps me go forwards.
-
4 – The cover artwork is in the same vein than the previous records so, this is already a Falconer trademark. Who draws the cover artworks?
Jan Meininghaus. This is the first time I didn’t have any idea of the cover but I think Jan managed to interpret the title track and the current situation of the band. The warrior returns home to the familiar country. You can really see on the cover that we´re back on track.
-
5 – There’s a limited digipack version of this new album with a bonus CD containing 4 traditional songs. How did you came up with this idea and what can you tell me about this traditional songs?
Traditional songs have been somewhat a trademark of Falconer since the beginning even though we haven’t done a lot of those. This time we had the chance to give away some extra candy. We had all material written and didn’t want to rush through 4 new ones as bonuses so we chose these ones. 3 of them are trad. Swedish songs where of 2 are metalized and one is kept in a very traditional way. Soft and mellow. Then we have one Icelandic song which have followed me from my “Viking era” in Mithotyn. It was the title track in a Viking movie that took place in Iceland during the 9:th century. The lyric is still in Swedish though. There is something special to do trad. songs although they are not too far away from our own sound.
-
6 – What kind of subjects influenced you to write the lyrics for this new record?
All kind of things from George Bush, Politics, religion, love and history. This time I think I managed to keep two camps satisfied. The lyrics can deal with anything although it seems at first look that they are all about stories in the medieval territory, but there´s way more to it.
-
7 – Do you have a tour prepared to promote the record?
No, there won’t be any tours anymore. Like we did many with Kriss? Mathias has a schedule that don’t allow him to be away whenever a tour shows its face. After having been able to play much live for a few years I now know that I prefer superb albums and less live instead of the other way around. Live for us will be summer festivals and occasional single shows.
-
8 – You can leave now a final message if you want to.
Despite the lack of tours you will be able to see us live at WACKEN this year. Hopefully we can also visit Portugal sometime in the future, who knows. Anyway, to all the fans: Cheers!!

Winters Bane - Entrevista

1 – Between the last album and this new one there were some line-up changes and at some point you were the only member of the band. What happened? How did you recruited the new members?
I have been the only original member since 1994. The original members were Terry Salem, whom I started the band with, Dave Holder and B.C. Richards. Tim and Dennis joined a couple of years later before we signed to Massacre Records. We had put the word out that we were looking to audition singers and out of the many who applied was Alex Koch. I loved what I heard and my manager contacted him and we started writing together. Mark was hired to pound on the drums a year later after out first demo.
-
2 – Why did you chose well known musicians like Alexander Koch (Powergod, Scenes, ex-Spiral Tower) and Mark Cross (Firewind, Hellloween, ex-Metalium) instead of not so well known musicians?
Our thinking was to get some musicians that we knew were excellent at their craft. Both of them have a great history of putting out good albums. I thought it would be good to recruit some well know players to help Winters Bane come back out after being dormant for a time.
-

3 – You also have a new label, Metal Heaven. How did you got in touch with them? How many albums did you signed for?
We were shopping for distribution for Redivivus in Europe and the U.S. and Metal Heaven liked what they heard and picked us up. We have a great relationship and I enjoy working with them. They are exactly the type of label we were looking for, and we’re looking forward to doing two more albums. We have a three album deal. I think it’s going to be very good thing.
-
4 – The new album is more intense and faster and powerful. It just came out like this or did you really wanted to write a faster and more powerful record?
I’m guessing that you are comparing it to Girth and HOAK. It’s been several years since our last record. I knew coming back would be difficult and we would need to have a bitch-n record. I wanted to come out with a straight right cross to the face. Pow! 40 minutes of shelling and blistering notes, no ballads or slow songs just kick ass drive your car fast and crank the stereo LOUD. So, yes it was my intention to throw some punches at the listener, in a good way of course.
-
5 – The album was produced by Curran Murphy (ex-Nevermore, Annihilator) and Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Helloween). How did you managed to have them producing the record? And how was it, to work with them and specially with Chris Tsangarides?
After Mark signed on to do the album Chris had asked Mark who was producing it. Mark contacted my manager and said that Chris was interested in producing the new album and of course we wanted him to do it, but had to work out the details. Chris was going to do the entire record when we ran into technical problems. Originally Mark and Alex were to record at his studio “The Dump” and I was to record here in Akron Ohio and send them my guitar tracks. The project was difficult enough to record without ever meeting each other face to face. And it was costing us more money than our budget would allow. Chris and Mark recorded the drums in London. I was looking for a studio that I would be comfortable in and spend the right amount of time laying the tracks. I was introduced to Curran six months earlier by mutual friend. I hung out at his “Smiley Sound Studio” and done side projects there. He knew that I was having technical problems and said that he would do the new Winters Bane record to help me out. I think both Chris and Curran were a blast to work with and I would recommend anyone who wants a professional job and a killer album.
-
6 – Who wrote the lyrics for this album? What kind of subjects did you used for the lyrics?
It was a group effort between Curran, Alex and I. We had entered the studio with half of the lyrics done and needed to finish them in about 10 days. We all caught the Flu at a different time and had to pull together to finish the album on time. I had a bunch of titles and new what the song should be about. It was a collaboration. Some of the subjects were;
1) LOTR Two Towers
2) An artist’s view on writing a song and his thoughts
3) The consuming nature of man
4) Three faiths – a man who believes but doesn’t act, a demon who knows and chooses opposite, and a man that follows the word
5) A king coming across the sea to reclaim his kingdom
6) A trial of prophet during the 1600’s
7) Leaving a trail of distrust and hate burning bridges
8) A warrior dying in the midst of battle
9) Cutting ties to an agency like the Mob
-
7 – Do you have a tour prepared to promote the record?
I would love to tour. You will have to ask Metal Heaven that question. We have a setlist that we will tour with but as of now have nothing scheduled in Europe.
-
8 – In your press-release it’s mentioned that your first singer was Tim Owens (Iced Earth, Beyond Fear, ex-Judas Priest). Do you think that the fact that his is a little bit famous now will help winters bane to get noticed by the press and the fans?
Maybe slightly, but it really is a double edged sword. We are looking to stand on our own, and I think we have accomplished it with our new record Redivivus. Some people say we are trying to capitalize on the fact Tim is famous but as I mentioned earlier he wasn’t our only singer, but is someone who did move on to become famous. I believe we all started in the same place and we will all end up in the same place, but taking different roads to get there.
-
9 – The album is about to be released but I already found the album in the internet. I remember back in the old days I used to do some tape-trading and that way I got to know lots of different bands from all over the world and this internet thing is just an upgrade of that tape-trading. What do you think about all this internet file sharing, downloading, mp3?
I think it’s great when you are trying to become known, but it also has its pitfalls. If a band spends every dollar it has on recording and pressing and then has to recoup their costs to do a follow up album then it becomes bands life and death struggle to put out another album. I would like to see some kind of encoding that would allow you to get any bands MP3s and listen to all songs for a limited number of times before you have to buy it, and then it self destructs..lol.
-
10 – The album has a modern production and some modern Heavy Metal elements but it is mainly an 80s metal oriented record. What do you think of the whole Metal scene right now and in particular of the Heavy and Power Metal scenes?
Is it alive and well in your opinion or is it just getting trendy and it lost its old school spirit?I think like any form of music you have your die hard. But with the resurgence of metal here in the states I think it’s coming back full force, and when a genre like metal gets accepted for radio it’s going to be big. I still think the spirit is there. You have to be creative to make it fresh again and not play the same old Maiden gallops and cheesy pick slides without having a purpose ... ha-ha! There better be some thought, or your new release will be filed in the dumpster.
-
11 – Do you want to leave a final message to your fans?
I wanted to thank everyone who has been a long time fan and for the new fans that have just discovered Winters Bane. I know Winters Bane had hidden in the wake, but it’s time to attack! Metal! We have good things coming. Keep a lookout and enjoy the ride!
Thank you,-Lou St. Paul
